Saturday, May 10
•
The annual food drive conducted by the
National Association of Letter
Carriers is more
important than ever this year.
• The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank is experiencing a
serious shortage of canned foods, the types of food that families rely upon when
they come here to the food bank or to one of
our member food pantries.
• High gasoline and food costs are causing more and more people to ask for food
assistance. Monthly, over 3,000 families are requesting food assistance in our
area. The crisis is beginning to effect middle class families, the types of
families that have never been to a food bank before.
• The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank distributes over 10,000 pounds of food a
day! That is equivalent to 10,000 pieces of canned vegetables or fruits.
• Everyone can help by contributing to the Letter Carriers Food Drive. Leave non
perishable food in a bag next to your mail box on Saturday, May 10. Most needed
are canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, tuna fish, macaroni and
cheese, pasta, rice, ……whatever non-perishables you buy to feed your family is
what the hungry families need.
• Not all letter carriers participate. If yours participates, you will receive a
reminder in the mail about a week before the food drive.
• If your letter carrier does not participate, please help by donating directly
to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. For directions to the Food Bank click

The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank is in need of
food!!
The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank distributes more than 2.5 million pounds food
and grocery products every year to more than 90 food pantries and other food
assistance organizations in the Fredericksburg area, including Stafford,
Spotsylvania, Caroline, and King George. These agencies directly feed thousands
of hungry families throughout the region.
This time of year is particularly difficult for those who work seasonal jobs or
struggle to pay heating bills. The food bank partners with many organizations
that provide food assistance to people in many different types of crises
situations; homelessness, unemployment, seasonal workers, the sick and
uninsured, children in crises, low-income senior citizens.
Non-perishable donations are needed. Especially needed are canned
vegetables and fruits, soups, stews, macaroni and cheese or other box dinners,
tuna, peanut butter, canned meats, pasta and pasta sauces, jelly and jam,
