Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Receives $18,780 Grant from Altria Companies Employee Community Fund (ACECF) to Support the Food For Life Program

Food Bank Receives Grant to Purchase Food for Hungry Seniors and the Disabled

Fredericksburg, VA (July 18, 2017) – The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank has been awarded a $18,780 grant from Altria Companies Employee Community Fund (ACECF) to provide food and produce for the Food for Life (FFL) program. According to the FRFB Agency and Programs Director, Mishelle Krogstad, “Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network, tells us that 56% of food pantry clients over 65 need to visit a food pantry every month in order to provide for their basic needs. Nationally, 30% of seniors who seek assistance from food pantries indicated they had to choose between food and medical care and 35% had to choose between food and paying their utilities. This grant will allow us to provide supplemental food assistance to the elderly and disabled of our community to help avoid these difficult choices.”

The food bank serves as the charitable food hub, distributing food to 73 non-profit and faith-based organizations throughout Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, the City of Fredericksburg, and Locust Grove. The Food for Life program alleviates hunger for low-income elderly and disabled individuals by providing monthly in-home deliveries of supplemental food. Oya Oliver, FRFB President and CEO stated, “due to skyrocketing expenses and increased personal costs, the challenge our FFL recipients face each day is the need to meet their dietary requirements, while struggling to live on a fixed income. These monthly deliveries of supplemental food improve nutrition and reduce the stress that comes with food insecurity. We are so thankful to ACECF for this opportunity to help provide additional food for this vulnerable population in our community.”

About Altria Companies Employee Community Fund (ACECF)

ACECF is a workplace-giving program managed directly by its employees.ACECF is one of a small number of programs of this type in the U.S. The fund illustrates the power of employees combining their contributions for a greater impact than they could achieve by donating individually. ACECF was founded in 2000 because employees wanted to be more actively involved in helping their communities. Employees choose the fund’s focus areas, and serve on committees that manage the fundraising and grantmaking selection process. Altria Group makes an annual contribution to ACECF and pays its administrative costs. This ensures that every employee dollar raised goes directly to support non-profit organizations in its local communities.
