Food insecurity most often affects those who live at or below the poverty level. However, there are government assistance programs in place that provide food assistance to people who live as much as 185% below poverty. Examples of government assistance programs are SNAP (food stamps), WIC, and the TEFAP (USDA Commodity Food). Depending on the financial situation in the household, this program may or may not provide enough assistance to raise the individual or family out of food insecurity.
